Carambola: a long wait!
In 1993, when I was a student in New York at The Juilliard School, I met the Brazilian composer Raimundo Penaforte. I asked him if he had any piece for trumpet and piano. He showed me the score of Carambola - a piece that was was never premiered. One year later, at my Juilliard's first recital, I performed Carambola and a new work by Raimundo specially written for the occasion: Tema pro Steve (Elegia). Later, Penaforte composed new pieces that were put together on Sweet New York. This entire repertoire for different trumpets and flugelhorn was premiered on my Juilliard's graduation recital, in 1996. The idea of recording a CD became inevitable. When I returned to Brazil, I searched for a pianist willing to play and record the pieces I had so far. Carlos Assis accepted the challenge without hesitation. Besides Carambola and Sweet New York, I already had Osvaldo Lacerda's Rondino (1974). That same year, Mr. Lacerda kindly sent me his newly composed Sonata (1996). The first recordings were made at night, in January 1997, at the Main Auditorium of Teatro Guaíra. In August of the same year, I got a position with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo. Due to the responsibilities of my new job, the conclusion of the recordings was postponed. At that time, I received the last two pieces that would be also recorded: Divertimento para Trompete e Piano by Hudson Nogueira, and Contradança by Alexandre Brasolim de Magalhães. The CD recording was finally completed in March 1999, and now, in 2003, I have the satisfaction of presenting to you Carambola. |
